Nonprofit Organizations: From Emergency to Efficiency

From 2018 through today (2025), Puerto Rico has experienced several events that marked a before and after in many ways, including the visibility of community-based groups and nonprofit organizations (NPOs). Previously, they were recognized only as grassroots spaces that created and/or supported community initiatives “for the love of it,” as people say. However, after recent atmospheric events such as Irma, María, and Fiona, among others, not to mention the 2020 earthquake and subsequent high-intensity tremors that impacted the island, NPOs began to gain visibility. It was largely these collective groups who, together with residents and some organizations, rolled up their sleeves to support recovery and, in some cases, even take charge of it. Unfortunately, it did not stop there. The global pandemic crisis was added to this, increasing the complexity of Puerto Rico’s slow recovery.

Focusing on the positive side, a world that was known to some but unknown to many others was uncovered. Federal funding allocations to support Puerto Rico’s recovery processes began to be heard about more strongly. This is how many organizations took on the task of learning about compliance, requirements and reports, budgets, fund allocation by line items, both restricted and unrestricted, compliance metrics, and other concepts. This knowledge is necessary because it allows us to compete and effectively comply with federal fund allocations.

The well-known third sector, NPOs, with their limited financial resources, began to insert themselves into the processes, embracing their initiatives even more. Always aware of the difficult road of competing against companies with sufficient personnel and financial resources, they have worked to bring funds to their organizations in order to secure sustainability and with the hope of making possible the social impact that grounds them, promoting systemic changes for the common good.

As for me, my experience in NPOs as a project manager has focused on ensuring compliance and driving the achievement of their objectives, helping contribute to the success and maximization of the impact of various initiatives that address social problems. Project managers are responsible for projects being developed in a structured manner, leading a team while also meeting established deadlines. This has been shown to be a key factor for progress, achieving results, optimizing team performance, and accessing funds in each third-sector project.

In addition, the experience gained through lessons learned in these processes has allowed organization personnel to develop key skills such as flexibility and adaptability. These are essential skills in environments where it is necessary to adjust quickly to changing situations and find creative solutions to emerging challenges. This adaptation has been decisive for project success and for maximizing social impact. As a result, and therefore as a benefit, NPO teams can focus on their tasks, avoiding work overload and falling into the well-known “burnout,” or operating in constant “firefighting” mode, the way many organizations work just to stay on their feet.

In summary, I consider the work of project managers in nonprofit organizations to be a key piece in guaranteeing progress, meeting objectives, and creating a positive impact on society. The application of effective methodologies, efficient project management, and attention to aspects such as communication, time, and planning are fundamental elements that support the success of these initiatives and can be strengthened through collaboration with experts like us.
